Cargo & Commercial Vans / Trucks Guidelines

The ACRISS Cargo and Commercial Vans/Trucks Guidelines have been developed for use alongside the ACRISS Car Classification Matrix  to support the booking of commercial vans and trucks across all electronic distribution and booking systems.

Unlike passenger vehicles, ACRISS does not directly assign vehicle codes to cargo and commercial vans/trucks in the same way as standard car classifications. Instead, ACRISS provides industry guidelines and classification standards designed to help car rental companies, travel technology providers, and booking platforms present consistent and accurate vehicle information, enabling customers to book with confidence.

Modernised Commercial Vehicle Classification

Working closely with its car rental members, ACRISS developed these updated guidelines to replace the previous classification system, which was based primarily on vehicle tonnage.

The new structure introduces a more modern and practical classification approach based on:

  • Cargo capacity measured in cubic metres
  • Vehicle size and load capability
  • Lifting platforms and specialist equipment
  • Additional vehicle features and operational requirements

This updated methodology better reflects how commercial vehicles are currently marketed and booked online and ensures coverage of a wider range of vans and trucks that do not require a specialist HGV licence.

Industry Expansion

In September 2024, the guidelines were further expanded in response to increasing demand from specialist industries, including mining and heavy commercial operations.

This update introduced new XL and XXL classifications for larger commercial vehicles and trucks, replacing the previous “Large Plus Vans” category and supporting a broader range of specialist fleet types.

Commercial Vehicle Coding Structure

Cargo and Commercial Vans/Trucks use the 2nd character “K” within the ACRISS Car Classification Matrix.

Commercial vehicle categories are then classified according to:

  • Cubic metre cargo capacity
  • Lifting platform availability
  • Vehicle size and specialist features

The guidelines continue to use the standard ACRISS ACRISS Car Classification Matrix  structure for:

  • 3rd Character: Transmission / Drive Type
  • 4th Character: Fuel Type / Air Conditioning

Only the first two classification characters differ from the standard passenger vehicle matrix and follow the dedicated commercial vehicle classification structure outlined within these guidelines.

For detailed vehicle specifications, equipment, and operational policies, customers should always refer to the individual rental company’s website and booking conditions.
